About This Workshop
SQL provides powerful but reasonably simple tools for data analysis and handling. This bootcamp will take absolute beginners through the basics of SQL to an ability to write queries with confidence. We will use a combination of lecture and in-class exercises to ensure that students leave with a working grasp of SQL fundamentals.
Prereqs & Preparation
Basic technical aptitude and orientation to computers, and curiosity to learn new tools. Willingness to learn about a text-based/principle driven analytic tool with little real GUI support, and determination to push through the natural frustration of confronting new concepts.
We will be pausing to let students run and write queries of their own, so students should bring laptops with an installed SQL implementation (SQLlite,MySQL, Postgres, SQL Server; Access is strongly discouraged). Instructions for installing MySQL will be distributed prior to class.
About the Instructor
Max Cantor
Born & raised in New York, Max embarked post-High School to journey across the country in search of enlightenment. His path meandered through Vermont, Cleveland, Los Angeles, and Massachusetts, and he came back home in 2014; not yet enlightened, but far wiser in the ways of design, software, and craft beers. He has developed software for Fortune 500's, B2B startups, and independent video game shops. After several years of remote consulting, he was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to apply his lifelong passion for education at General Assembly. When he's not teaching, he fences foil and pe, designs beautiful reference posters for developers and gamers, and works way harder than necessary on making mix CDs.
