NYU Steinhardt Announces 2015 Forum on Site-Specific Performance

NEW YORK - NYU Steinhardt's Program in Educational Theatre will host The Forum on Site-Specific Performance this spring. Allied professionals of all disciplines, emerging artists and community-engaged practitioners are invited to exchange perspectives and collectively envision the future of site-specific work. The event's dynamic roster features workshops, interdisciplinary panelsand innovative performances from creative teams and representatives of organizations such as: 3-Legged Dog, Accomplice, Community-Word Project, Kerrigan-Lowdermilk, Spellbound Theatre, Trusty Sidekick Theater Company, Third Rail Projects and more.
Through the mutual re-imagining of space, site-specific work moves beyond traditional notions of art and audience, developing a nuanced relationship between spectator and space, blurring the line between performer and patron. Site-specific explorations have long been embraced by artist-practitioners across disciplines, particularly as they collaborate with partners in the field to link performance and community on common ground, says forum curator Dr. Amy Cordileone. Through participation in such encounters, students, stakeholders and artists have the potential to unlock new understanding of the stories imprinted in their surroundings.
This 4-day event will interrogate art-making processes by and with established artists in the fields of music, visual art, theatre and dance. Sharing creative space through site-specific production, forum participants will engage in transgressive acts, questioning conventional practices and interfacing with live art in non-traditional settings to explore the following:

As location-driven productions gain commercial visibility, how can we as artists and educators further utilize, build upon and innovate form while re-examining space as opportunity?

To what extent does technology inform site-specific performance work?

What can we offer a given space as artists, and what can that space offer us in return?
