Bring your creative ideas to life with Adobe InDesign, the professional page layout standard, used by designers and production professionals to design, preflight, and publish a broad range of documents such as brochures, catalogs, magazines and books. InDesign allows you to lay out and design multiple page documents. This workshop is designed to get you up and running with Adobe InDesign in three days. The focus will be on step-by-step instruction leading students through the most important tools and concepts in InDesign.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have learned the basics in InDesign such as how to create a new file, set up master pages, place images, format text, link text boxes, use layers, and create print ready files. They will also learn the basics of typography and page layout design.
Session I - [The Basics + Page Layout] (1/8)
Learn the basic Adobe InDesign interface
Set up and design text-only, single page layout from start to finish
Learn to use various functions like master pages, custom headline and linked body
Session II - [Adding Imagery to your Layout] (1/15)
Design a two-page book or magazine spread
Learn to use paragraph and character windows in detail
Learn tips for strong design and typography
Import images from Illustrator or Photoshop
Session III - [Using Master Pages, Style Sheet and Color Swatches] (1/22)
This lesson will build off the first two sessions, use lessons learned to design two book/magazine series covers
Use master pages, style sheet and saved color swatches to create uniformity between pages
Learn to package InDesign files to send to a commercial printer
Prerequisites: This is an introductory course designed for first time and beginning InDesign users. No prior experience with InDesign is required for this class.
Required class materials / software: All students must be able to bring a laptop to each class (Mac preferred). You will need to have AdobeInDesign version CS4 or higher already downloaded on this laptop for the start of class. The full version of Adobe InDesign CS6 or the free 30-day trial version of it can be found at http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign
Camille Murphy Bugden is a Designer and Creative Director with a specialty in branding and marketing. She has over ten years of experience working in publishing, marketing and higher education. Her former client list includes Sony, HBO, Marvel, Nickelodeon, Penguin Books, Upperdeck, New York City Public Schools, and Barnes and Noble. Camille holds a masters in Communication Design from Pratt Institute. Currently, Camille resides in Brooklyn, NY and works as a designer and creative director on a contract basis. She is also a part-time professor at Parsons the New School for Design and Pratt Institute, here in New York. http://www.camillebugden.com
