About This Class

Whether you're an entrepreneur, startup, social media or marketing professional, small business, or just looking to up your media skills, this class will help you understand the fundamentals of public relations. You'll learn what constitutes news and how to extract newsworthy angles and create compelling pitches, as well as when and how to reach out to journalists for optimum chances of getting media coverage for yourself or your business. You'll also find out how to develop an eye for what makes a topic newsworthy to journalists, the place of press releases in 21st century public relations, and how to syndicate news. Plus, you'll participate in in-class practical applications of what you've learned.

Prereqs & Preparation

Students who will benefit the most from this class will already possess good to advanced oral and written communications skills, a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, and follow the broad news and social media regularly.

Takeaways

  • Gain the ability to identify the difference between a topic (such as your business or expertise or invention) and news.

  • Be able to extract the news from the whole topic.

  • Develop a thorough understanding of how press release newswires work and their place in 2014 public relations and marketing - when it pays to distribute a press release via a wire service, when to go direct to journalists, and the value that press release still has vs. the value they have lost in recent times.

  • Find out how the media machine works - why things get covered, why other things don't, how to branch out to get multiple points of coverage in television, radio, print, and online media for the same topic, and how to think creatively to gain PR opportunities.

  • Learn how to think like a publicist.
