Learn deep learning the fun way.by building a robot & taking it home! Hardware & software technologies have improved to the point where you really can build an autonomous robot in just a few hours. Come join our community of engineers & tinkerers to learn how to build, program & play with your very own robot.

You will build your own Raspberry PI/TensorFlow powered robot that you can take home & show your friends. In the process, you will get an overview of hardware (everything from soldering to I2C) & software (raspberry PIs, Linux, Python, Tensorflow, Deep Learning)

Prerequisites

This class can support a wide range of skill levels. The more experience you have, the more customization you will be able to do, but everyone should be able to get the robot running autonomously.

Schedule

Hour 1: Setup the Raspberry PI with Ubuntu. Install Python, & requisite software/libraries. Get OpenCV installing & then set aside.

Hour 2: Build the Robot chassis. Solder the motor hat. Learn to use a multimeter. Attach sonars. Install camera.

Hour 3: Get the Robot moving non-autonomously, powered by an nginx web server.

Hour 4: Make TensorFlow do object recognition. Turn on autonomous motion.

Materials

We will provide for every student:

Raspberry PI 3

Camera

16GB SD Card

Adafruit Motor HAT

2WD Robot Chassis

Small USB Speaker

Sonar

Wires

Laptop Battery

What you will need to bring:

You need to bring a laptop (or a keyboard, a mouse & monitor) to program the robot.

Optional Materials

Bring your own fabrics, wheels, stickers, microphones etc. & you can make your robot even smarter, faster & more stylish.

Meet your instructor Lukas Biewald:

"From my earliest memories, I can remember making & building whatever came to mind."

Lukas is a successful entrepreneur & technologist who has his BS in Mathematics & his Masters in Computer Science. A few highlights from his career include being one of the first employees at Powerset (Sold to Microsoft for 100+ million) & starting his own AI & crowdsourcing company, Crowdflower, which has become one of the top AI companies in the space.

Lukas has been building robots for years & has started his own robotics lab in San Francisco. Lukas was a Teaching Assistant for the now famous Stanford CS221 class & has taught this seminar on machine learning & robotics to large tech organizations as well as engineering conferences. His passion for AI is only surpassed by his passion for building robots & setting things on fire (ie fireworks).
