Chronic and acute illnesses present a significant challenge to New York City's healthcare system, which faces growing costs and poor outcomes. The city is grappling with high rates of preventable and chronic illnesses, including asthma, diabetes, obesity and hypertension that are faced by families or all sizes and income levels. In addition, Hepatitis C and other infections also pose a significant risk to the community.

The Merck Social Health Hack is a two day hackathon that seeks to bring together a community of developers, designers, entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals, and community members to improve the health and wellness of the community. Through the event, scheduled to take place around Social Media Week in NYC, Merck aims to support the formation of new ideas and prototypes that improve health literacy for vulnerable populations, promote wellness, help people track and manage their health information and medication regiments, and enable self-driven community health improvement based on internally identified needs.

Teams will be tasked to flesh out concepts, develop wireframes and basic prototypes that illustrate their innovative solution. Teams are encouraged to use one or more APIs provided. In the spirit of Social Media Week, we encourage all applications and concepts to incorporate social' features.

HOW DO I REGISTER?
Registration is free but seating is limited. Be sure to reserve your seat today by registering here. We welcome developers, students, researchers, entrepreneurs, clinicians, patient advocates, informaticians, designers, consumers, community partners, public health prevention experts, data experts, public health providers, and anyone interested in creating a level of excitement that will drive continued community engagement far into the future.

FOOD AND ACCOMMODATIONS:
We will provide you with fuel all day. Just bring yourself, your laptops, and your brainpower.

PRIZES:
First place prize is $5,000 and one free pass to the HxRefactored Conference (estimated at $799). The second place prize is $3,000. Third place prize is $2,000.

Evaluation Criteria
Creativity (30%): Ability to engage targeted audience in usage, ease of use and novel application of APIs and data, public health interventions and technology.
Decision Making (20%): Ability to illustrate how the conceptual designs and working prototype application/tools can promote better data-driven decision-making related to the risk of becoming overweight/obese and develop prediabetes, from lifestyle and environmental factors.
Social (10%): Incorporation of the social features in the application in the spirit of Social Media Week.
Feasibility of Implementation (20%): Ability to implement the working prototype within a year's time.
Utilization of APIs (20%): It is expected that various APIs and data sets such as the Validic API, HealthData.gov, Open MRS API, and other relevant APIs will be utilized to create an innovative solution.
