For engineering, these challenges present opportunities to design and develop technologies that are game-changing and have global impact. It is no surprise that three of the challenges on the list were specifically at the interface of engineering with medicine and health: advance health informatics; engineer better medicines; and reverse-engineer the brain.

Clearly engineering is important to the future of medicine and health. By marrying medical science and engineering, we have new ways to diagnose and treat illness, utilize the explosion of ever-growing amounts of data, regenerate human tissue, and more fully explore and harness the power of the brain.

In this symposium, we will address four key areas of exciting discovery and innovation where engineering meets medicine: data and health; imaging and health; regenerative medicine; and neuroengineering. NAE members and the general public are invited to get a glimpse into the amazing transformative power of applying engineering principles and techniques to medicine and the promise this holds to positively affect the future of human health.
