What is a civic hacknight?

This is a weekly project night is for technologists, designers, developers, data scientists, map makers, and activists who are working on "civic technology" projects. Consider this to be a study hall or office hours to improve you and the city.

This night is for those who want to:

* work on projects
* start a new project, or find one to join
* get feedback from experts
* learn about tools for local empowerment, open data, and open government

Bring your laptop, power supply, ideas, projects, maps, data, and questions. Collectively, we will try to answer them.

Projects & presentations:

We keep the formal part of the evening down to a minimum: announcements, meet your neighbor, etc. After, we will have a number of people present, specific projects, and have some skills share / education.

Community Projects:

* What are YOU working on? Share it on talk.beta.nyc

Hacknight Featured Project:

For the night, we'll have members of NYC's GIS team talk about the future of NYC's awesome geocoder. Join us as we add more tools to our toolkit.

NYC's Geocoder

Geoclient is a RESTful web service interface to the Citys standard geocoding system, Geosupport, which is maintained and distributed by the Department of City Planning. Geoclient was developed by DoITT to provide a simplified method for implementing geocoding from non-mainframe platforms. Geoclient was originally intended for internal City usage only but was subsequently released on the NYC Developer Portal in late 2013 to bring this often requested functionality to the public.

Since its release, usage of Geoclient has been consistently strong and continues to grow. There are currently more than 300 active applications using Geoclient and it is common for the service to geocode several million locations in the course of a day. Due to its increasing popularity, capacity will inevitably be exceeded on the Citys hosting infrastructure. In order to avoid performance bottlenecks due to preventative rate limiting policies or, in the extreme case, service outages, DoITT intends to release the Geoclient source code under an Apache 2.0 license. This will allow anyone to host their own unrestricted Geoclient instances. Of course, as an open-source project, developers can enhance, fix and extend the software as their needs require. Because Geoclient is just a suite of proxy applications and libraries which provide modern platforms with convenient access to Geosupport, any practical use of the Geoclient code requires the platform-specific Geosupport binaries which will be distributed independently by the Department of City Planning.
