Abstracts & Bios:

"Accelerating science, Cori Bargmann

Dr. Cori Bargmannis a neuroscientist & geneticist who leadsthe science strategy at the new Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Chan Zuckerberg Science has the goal of accelerating basic science & technology that will make it possible to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of the century. To meet this goal, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative will support new ways to bring different kinds of scientists & engineers together, develop new tools & technologies to empower the scientific community, & build support for biomedical research.

Dr. Bargmann is also the Torsten N. Wiesel Professor & head of the Lulu & Anthony Wang Laboratory of Neural Circuits & Behavior at the Rockefeller University in New York. At Rockefeller University, her laboratory uses the simple nematode wormCaenorhabditiselegansto better understand how genes & the environment interact to generate flexible behaviors. She holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Building technology for large-scale, collaborative science, Samantha Scovanner

Samantha is Chan Zuckerberg Initiative's product manager for the Human Cell Atlas. She has been building software for life sciences & health IT for the past 10 years. Samantha has a B.S. in computer science & M.S. in biomedical informatics from Stanford University.

Cells: Past, present, & future -- a history of algorithms in biological data, Olga Botvinnik

Dr. Olga Botvinnik is a Bioinformatics Scientist at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. She recently defended her PhD in Bioinformatics & Systems Biology from UC San Diego in a Quinceanera dress & is an avid open source software advocate.

Translating process into product, Rebecca Egger

Rebecca is a product manager at the Chan Zuckerberg initiative. While getting her computer science degree she worked in an astrophysics lab & managed her own design firm. Since graduating she has worked at a design firm, a venture-backed startup, & at an IT-focused strategic consulting company, where she worked with dozens of companies across the world to assess product needs & empower users with software.

About the Host:

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative

We believe we can make the world better for generations to come by uniting the greatest minds to solve the toughest problems. It will take long term focus & new ways of working together.

At the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, we empower strong, independent leaders from academia & government, as well as the technology & nonprofit sectors to do the best work possible. We engage directly in the communities we serve because no one understands our societys challenges like those who live them everyday. These partners help us identify problems & opportunities, learn fast & iterate toward our goals for the next century.

By bringing world class engineering to the front lines of science & education, we can build new tools & technologies that help organizations scale. We invest in the best ideas regardless of organizational structure. That includes nonprofit & for profit entities, as well as non-governmental research institutions.
