ABSTRACT:
Computer systems can understand the language that people use better if they share the background knowledge, the common sense, that people use when they communicate. Machine learning can be more effective & require less training data if it starts from this background of common sense, understanding what people are talking about in general when they use language, before learning from its input data.
We discuss the long-running open-data project ConceptNet, a multilingual knowledge graph that connects words & phrases of natural language with labeled relationships, providing background knowledge & common sense about what words mean in many languages. We then discuss how to use ConceptNet in modern machine learning & show how ConceptNet is used in a commercial setting at the enterprise feedback management company Luminoso.
SPEAKER BIO: Dr. Catherine Havasi (CEO/Co-Founder, Luminoso)
Dr. Catherine Havasi is the CEO & Co-Founder of Luminoso Technologies, an AI-based natural language understanding software company in Cambridge, MA. Luminoso was founded on nearly a decade of research at the MIT Media Lab on how NLP & machine learning could be applied to text analytics.
For over 15 years she has been researching language & learning & was a research scientist in artificial intelligence & computational linguistics at the MIT Media Lab where she ran the Digital Intuition group. In the late 90s, she co-founded the Common Sense Computing Initiative, or ConceptNet, a big-data lexical resource used in over two thousand academic projects.
