Overview:

Perhaps the biggest breakthrough of Distributed Ledger Technology (i.e. blockchain) is the fusion of public-key cryptography & distributed consensus mechanism. In other words, maximum security & immutability. After all, in order to successfully attack a blockchain, you needto take over not only a single servernode (like Equifax) but also most of the entire network. That is a hefty & costly feat to do on large blockchains, with the vast "hash powers" they possess. Not worthwhile at all togo toe-to-toe with rest of the validators aka miners. Thus, the blockchain "hacks" we hear about today are primarily peripheral attacks: stealing private keys from 3rd-party exchanges or exploiting smart contract code loopholes. We have yet seen an attack that has truly threatened the cryptographic or consensus integrity of a major DLT/blockchain.

With the advancement of quantum computers, however, that might all change. Since quantum computersare orders of magnitude more powerful than conventional binary computers that we all use, we cannot take our current blockchains protocols for granted. What happens if quantumcomputers become cheap enough for attackers to start using, while restof the miners still use binary computers/ASICs? Uh oh. In this event, we will go over the current state quantum computers, see whether they indeed pose a real threat in the near future, & if so, how different DLTs/blockchains prepare themselves to be quantum-resistant.

Topics:

-Intro to Quantum Computers

-Progress & Forecasts of Quantum Computers

-Comparing Quantum Resistance of Today's DLTs/Blockchains

-Latest Research Areas inQuantum Resistance
