<P>Every day we make countless decisions and judgements about peoples character, abilities, and potential, without realizing it. Researchers call this "unconscious bias." These biases are shaped by our identities, experiences, and a lifetime of exposure to cultural attitudes about age, gender, race, religion, social class, sexual orientation, disability status, and nationality.</P>
<P>For an equal and just society to thrive, we must interrogate our cultural operating system with impunity to disrupt and repair where it inherently or systematically enforces different realities for people privileging some while marginalizing others. Through design, we must develop an awareness of both the intended and unintended consequences of our cultural conditioning.</P>
<P>This talk will explore how we can use design to mitigate the negative influence of unconscious bias.</P>

<DIV>Rafael Sergio Smith focuses on product and systems design at <A HREF="https://www.ideo.org/" REL="nofollow">IDEO.org</A>. A designer and entrepreneur with experience tackling challenges from emergency shelters in disaster zones to agricultural systems in India and Africa, his work ranges from physical products to software applications and systems. Prior to joining IDEO.org, Rafa was lead designer at <A HREF="https://joinmosaic.com/" REL="nofollow">Solar Mosaic</A>, an online investment platform for clean energy, helping the company enter the market and grow from zero to ten thousand users. As an industrial design consultant, he has created products for manufacturers like Bosch, SunBeam, and Pyrex and founded Uber Shelter, a company designing emergency shelters in Haiti, Venezuela, and Japan.</DIV>
