An hour of free talks by two scientists kicked off by a wine reception! The Obesity Epidemic: Why Some of Us Are Fat and What We Can Do About It A Talk by Dr. Barry Levin, M.D. More than one-third of US children and adolescents are overweight or obese. In this Know Science talk, Dr. Levin will tackle the hard questions related to obesity: What is obesity and how widespread is it? Is obesity due to food addiction? Why is it so hard for me to lose and keep off weight once I become obese? The good and the bad- what treatments are there for obesity? Why is obesity important- what serious medical conditions are associated with obesity? Is obesity inherited and how do early life events alter any inherited tendency to become obese? What is the relationship among food intake, expenditure of calories, and storage of excess calories as fat? How does the brain and body communicate to regulate food intake, body weight and obesity? Dr. Barry Levin is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Neurology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He has spent more than 30 years studying the basic mechanisms by which the brain monitors and regulates the physiological and metabolic status of the body in animal models of obesity and type 2 diabetes. He completed his undergraduate and medical school training at Emory University. As a resident in Internal Medicine at Cornell-affiliated hospitals, Barry did a research fellowship at Rockefeller University with Jules Hirsh, one of the founding fathers of obesity research. There, he assisted Dr. Hirsh in the assessment of various metabolic, physiological, and psychological aspects of extreme caloric restriction as a treatment for morbidly obese patients. Barry then went on to train in Neurology at Cornel-affiliated hospitals and at the NIH and pursue a career in academic neurology at Dartmouth and New Jersey Medical Schools. Barry is excited to share his extensive career research and wisdom with Know Science. "GMOs: Engineering the Genetics of Our World" A Talk by Kate Bredbenner Are GMOs safe? Getting information on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) from the internet can be a scary experience. This talk aims to explain the "what, why, and how" of GMOs in an unbiased, informative, and scientifically accurate way. Kate will go through real-world examples of GMOs and give a scientific perspective on the upsides and downsides of the technology. Know Science talks aim to be an engaging experience specifically designed for the public to understand the science behind GMOs and allow plenty of chances to ask questions during and after the talk. Join us! Kate Bredbenner is a scientist at the Rockefeller University in the Laboratory of Cellular Biophysics where she studies virus DNA engineering using fluorescence microscopes. She is a scientific communicator and blog editor for Know Science and an avid supporter of science outreach. She is currently involved with a variety of science outreach organizations, including the BioBus, the outreach lab at the Rockefeller University, BraiNY, and Know Science. Her goal is to make a career of talking to the public about science in a fun and informative way.
