<P>Achieving career success as an underrepresented minority often comes with the question of whether we should become a champion for diversity efforts or keep our heads down & try to be recognized for technical accomplishments alone. In this discussion, we'll hear the stories of some accomplished technologists as we tackle the nuances of what it means to be vocal, the toll it takes on your day job & getting recognized for those efforts.</P>

<P><STRONG>Standard Deviation</STRONG> is Airbnbs newest employee resource group, focusing on underrepresented minorities in technical fields. We are excited to host the next <A HREF="http://airbnb.io/events/taking-flight/" TARGET="_blank" REL="noopener noreferrer noopener nofollow noopener noreferrer nofollow nofollow noreferrer nofollow">Taking Flight</A> event, a series for underrepresented groups in technology. All proceeds, less fees, will be donated to Streecode Academy, who works to equip a generation of underrepresented leaders with the skills to hack, hustle & design the future.</P>

<P><A HREF="https://www.linkedin.com/in/cgalvan/" TARGET="_blank" REL="noopener noreferrer noopener nofollow noopener noreferrer nofollow nofollow noreferrer nofollow">Claudia Galvn</A> has led product development at Oracle, Adobe & Microsoft. In the last few years she has focused on helping startups in Silicon Valley launch products internationally. She is a former president of the Society of Women Engineers in Silicon Valley, former Sr. Director at the Anita Borg Institute & Board Member at Notre Dame High School & mentor at the TechWomen program. She is currently a Doctoral Candidate at Drexel University researching strategies to increase the pipeline of women in STEM.</P>
<P><A HREF="https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimberlynicolemartin/" TARGET="_blank" REL="noopener noreferrer noopener nofollow noopener noreferrer nofollow nofollow noreferrer nofollow">Kim Martin</A>started her career in music tech in New York at HBO on Volume.com, continued many years later in San Francisco at BandPage, & now innovates in the music space as a technical lead on YouTubes Music team. Along the way she has spent her career working on complex big data & Artificial Intelligence problems for organizations including Orbitz, United States Department of Defense, Cubic, Avis/Budget, & MasterCard.</P>
<P><A HREF="https://www.linkedin.com/in/edwhunter/" TARGET="_blank" REL="noopener noreferrer noopener nofollow noopener noreferrer nofollow nofollow noreferrer nofollow">Ed Hunter</A> leads the Performance & Operating Systems group for the streaming service at Netflix. His team is responsible for helping tune, configure & benchmark the elements that comprise the Netflix streaming control plane. Prior to Netflix he was a director of software at Juniper Networks for OS & virtualization infrastructure. Prior to Juniper he was at Sun Microsystems, where he was chief of staff to the CTO of Sun.</P>
