Talk #1: ETL Architecture For Experimentation at Flatiron Health

Gil will share some of the principles and techniques used by Flatiron to build the nations largest cancer database. Flatiron Healths platform connects cancer centers across the country on a common technology infrastructure, supporting treatment for about 1 in 5 active cancer patients in the U.S. Their architecture is focused on enabling rapid development iterations with cancer specialists, nurses, and other stakeholders. Rapidly integrating medical data from hundreds of heterogeneous source systems required Flatiron to develop a unique data integration and processing framework. Iterating quickly while incorporating knowledge from oncologists, nurses, medical informaticists, and healthcare analysts has largely shaped this architecture as well.

The talk will focus on tooling and the architecture that we built to support rapid iteration on complex ETL processes (iteration itself is quick) and minimizes knowledge translation iterations (number of iterations is smaller - we get stuff right with less iterations). The lessons taught here are on building architecture that optimally supports a business process or a unique development process and less about CS concepts like scalability, reliability etc.

Gil Shklarski is the VP of Engineering at Flatiron Health. Heis in charge of developing the core systems and technologies that are powering the Flatiron platform. Prior to joining Flatiron, Gil built web scale data processing systems at Facebook and Microsoft. Prior to that experience, Gil worked on high performance mission critical systems as a researcher, consultant, and R&D group manager in elite technology units in the Israeli Defense Ministry. Gil holds a Ph.D. in computer science in the field of scientific computing from Tel-Aviv University.Find Gil Shklarski at

Talk #2: Architecting Google Drive's realtime SDK

Note: This will be a talk preview, about 20 minutes + Q&A.

Micah Lemonik of Google NYCwill discuss the challenges of building behaviorally complex products and realtime state management systems at a global scale.

Learn about the architectural history of Google Docs and how we build the worlds largest real time collaboration platform and how we make that platform available to developers.

Some of the things covered:

Making realtime collaboration on any document type workMaking a word processor and spreadsheet in a browserBuilding scalable distributed systems that need to support a large amount of object state and non-idempotent / non-commutative messaging

Micah Lemonik is a Principal Software Engineer at Google's New York City headquarters where he is an engineering lead in the Google Apps group. Micah joined Google in 2005 and has worked on many popular products such as Google Docs and Google Drive.
