Abstract:

Determining the subject-matter (or the aboutness) of a piece of text is key to determining relevancy. But determining aboutness requires at least three steps: (i) accurate word-sense disambiguation (going from words to concepts/meanings); (ii) going from simple (semantic network) concepts to a potentially infinite set of compound concepts, which we call topics; and (iii) determining the set ofkeytopics in a piece of text.In this talk we will describe this process and its implementation in the Magnet semantic engine. Through a number of live demonstrations we will show how discovering the true aboutness of text can result in near perfect semantic recall and precision, as well as in cross-language semantic matching."
