One of the most difficult aspects of starting or running a business in healthcare is getting your model right. Even once established, regulatory and market forces drive model shifts that few other industries face with such regularity. People say our industry is slow to change but that is not entirely true. We are slow to change in ways that are not adaptive. Most of our creativity and energy is poured into reacting to the changing landscape we operate in. In this event we will explore a few of the best new ideas and models in the space and work out some of the challenges in a fun interactive session led by Michelle Zimmerman, Chief Innovation Officer at Alphacare and formerly at Aetna. To apply to present your new model and talk about it, please click here.

You may recall Michelle Zimmerman from our Surviving and Thriving under the ACA Panel earlier this year.

We are very pleased to announce the support of Smart Designas the host and sponsor of this event.

Michelle ZimmermanMichelle currently holds the position of Chief Innovation Officer at AlphaCare of New York, a new health plan that offers Medicaid Managed Long Term Care, Medicare, and Dual-Eligible products.Prior to AlphaCare, Michelle spent time at Aetna (Healthagen Division) where she was afounding member of its business innovations team and successfully oversaw the creation of 3 new healthcare companies.

Before Aetna, Michelle was a management consultant at the Boston

Consulting Group and, prior this this, practiced corporate law at Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, a New York law firm. She is the co-author of a book chapter in health policy and an adviser to numerous healthcare start-ups. Michelle received her JD, MBA, and Honors Bachelor degrees from the University of Toronto and is a member of the New York State Bar.

Michelle will discuss current healthcare business models and the challenges facing start-ups looking to navigate the evolving landscape of healthcare stakeholders. Michelle will walk through the healthcare ecosystem (e.g., payers, providers, consumers etc), how each was motivated prior to the ACA, how they are motivated post ACA (e.g., value based reimbursement, high deductible plans) and the opportunities for entrepreneurs to meet the needs of these stakeholders. Michelle will provide practical advice for how to think about defining, scaling, and promoting their business.

Next, up to three new ideas from selected healthcare entrepreneurs who are navigating the complexities of the healthcare system will present. The goal is not only to learn about the new models, but to help conceptualize and refine next iterations that will make them even more successful, with advice from both Michelle and the expert H2NYC crowd. We hope that the session will help entrepreneurs define, or refine, their business model through productive dialogue or help folks just looking to understand the evolving landscape of healthcare stakeholders.
