Join us for Session 3 of a three-part program designed to assist principals of early-stage companies in establishing solid foundations for their entrepreneurial ventures. Each program will be delivered by a panel of attorneys with extensive experience in both the subject matter of the series and the operations and concerns of startups and emerging growth companies. These interactive sessions will be equally valuable for principals of existing companies and those intending to start companies.
In this session, we will discuss issues related to:
-The fundamentals of copyright, trademark, patent and other forms of intellectual property (IP) protection
-Securing IP rights from founders, employees, consultants and vendors
-Common IP issues related to software and user generated content
-Protecting your IP from infringement.
-Avoid infringement of third party IP

Jerrold B. Spiegel heads the Technology, eCommerce & Privacy Group, and is a member of the firm’s Publishing Group. He has advised clients involved with computer-based media and on-line services since 1985. His clients include online publishers, software developers and consultants, website developers and operators, video game and other mobile content providers and developers, online content providers, eCommerce companies as well as the more traditional advertising and promotion companies, commercial production companies, filmmakers, book producers and publishers, including magazine publishers. Mr. Spiegel is the author of numerous articles and publications including “Do We Have A Deal or Not? The Enforceability of Virtual Contracts”, Bloomberg Law Reports, “Legal Landmines” chapter in Web & New Media Pricing Guide, and “Covering Your Legal Bases” chapter in Buying Web Services: The Survival Guide to Outsourcing. Jessica R. Friedman has practiced copyright, trademark and literary property law in New York City for over two decades. Her clients include technology, publishing, e-commerce and entertainment companies as well as individual authors. Among the matters Ms. Friedman handles are agreements concerning copyright ownership, use and transfer, such as software development and licensing agreements, content licenses in all media, publishing agreements for authors and small publishers and collaboration agreements for co-authors; Web site development agreements and terms of use; fair use analyses; domestic and international trademark clearance, prosecution, licensing, and policing; joint venture and joint development agreements, acquisitions, and other corporate transactions; direct marketing matters, such as compliance with advertising, CAN-SPAM and fax laws; pre-publication review of manuscripts for libel and other legal issues; and matters related to the rights of privacy and publicity. In an earlier life as a litigation associate, she represented clients in copyright and trademark infringement litigation, including the plaintiffs in the precedential case of Childress v. With over 20 years of experience, Mr. Reisler's practice focuses on corporate transactions and financings, primarily for companies with significant intellectual property assets. He also advises clients on e-commerce, privacy and data security and Internet law issues. Mr. Reisler's clients include recorded music and music publishing companies, film and television studios and production companies, software developers, apparel companies, digital media companies, Web hosting providers and ISPs and health care and biotechnology companies.
Mr. Reisler has represented buyers and sellers in connection with a wide variety of acquisitions of music publishing companies and recorded music companies.
