Description

Welcome to Code Across NYC! On 23 Feb, we will celebrate the venn diagram of Code for America's Code Across America and International Open Data Day. Hashtag: #codeacross For this awesome, one-day civic hack day, we will have a little bit for everyone. If you are interested in building civic apps, we have some high value data sets for you to chew on. If you are interested in developing NYC's 21st Century technology policy, we will have thought leaders for you to debate. If you don't know where to start, we will have previous BigApps winners walk you though the concept of building a civic app. The day will be broken down into three tracks...

1. A mini-race for reuse by taking Code For America's Open Source apps and tailor them to NYC.

  • End of day requirement: to get one of these apps loaded with NYC.gov data.
  • Adopta, http://github.com/codeforamerica/adopt-a-hydrant
  • Shareabouts, https://github.com/openplans/shareabouts
  • Textizen, http://textizen.com/
  • Local Wiki, http://localwiki.org

2. Idea-a-thon! Let's prototype civic apps based on Civic Data! Come learn from Ontodia, BigApps 3.0 grand prize winners, and learn how to build awesome civic apps.

  • End of day requirement: write out a prototype.
  • Look at NYC's Open Data portal and design applications based on those datasets.
  • Look at Public Safety Linked data from pediacities.com and design applications based on this dataset.

3. Plan for the future! Discuss the future of NYC's Internet access, Education Policy, Open Government, and Technology Industry Policy.

  • End of day requirement: add ideas to the NYTM Future Government discussion page.
  • NYC Digital's Roadmap to the Digital City
  • Manhattan Boro President's Start Up City
  • NYC Open Data Tech Standards
  • Jessica Lappin's, canidate for Manhattan Boro President, modernizing Community Boards.
