Immutable Infrastructure: On Misnomers, Zoology, and Pre-accidents

Anthony Mazzarella, Associate Director, Software Engineering

Youve written some code, run its tests, bundled an artifact, and shipped it. Sadly, as soon as it serves its first request, live traffic or configuration drift or a partial deployment failure reveals a production-impacting issue. Oops. This talk will discuss immutable infrastructure. Well touch on deployment patterns that encourage replacement over modification, while exploring the accuracy of terms, the pets vs. cattle concept, and safety properties inherent to its practice.

About Anthony: Anthony has been dreaming about Infrastructure-as- Code for the last 10 years, and believes that one day we might pull it off. His primary interests are distributed systems, the New York Mets, academic computer science papers, and cooking. His first computer was an Intel 80286 with 1MB of RAM.

Full Stack: NodeJS at MLBAM

Paolo Vaca, Director, Web Software Engineering

Transitioning from a monolithic legacy application has its challenges, on and off the field. At MLBAM we took that challenge head on and standardized a white label NodeJS/Express application which is currently used to power all of MLBAM's new sports and entertainment partners on Amazon Web Services. We will dive into the architecture, tooling, deployments and workflow, all of which have helped MLBAM improve turnaround time to meet tight deadlines while maintaining quality and consistency for all of our new digital products.

About Paolo: Paolo has over 15 years of experience building highly scalable digital products for world class brands reaching millions of users. Paolo joined MLB Advanced Media in 2012 where he currently leads client development teams that are responsible for Web Platform, Web Media, as well as sports Scores and Stats. Prior to MLBAM he managed front end development for Scripps Networks, parent company of popular brands such as Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel. Before Scripps Networks he was a web developer at WebMD. When he isnt geeking out, Paolo enjoys quality family time, rooting for them Mets, medium rare steaks, and a neat whisk(e)y.
