Today most individuals only care about their personal data enough to try and keep it from being hacked. Unaware of tools like Personal Clouds or methodologies like VRM (Vendor Relationship Management) designed to help them control their data, they quickly become bored around issues of privacy.

The rise of autonomous vehicles and Artificial Intelligence, however, raises unique ethical questions that are causing individuals torethink the relationship to their personal data. For instance, how will individuals know if their self-driving cars will respond in ways that match their values during a collision? Will Internet of Things manufacturers require, as Jason Millar points out in this WIRED article, informed ethical consent from anyone utilizing their products? Will this same mindset apply to media as well, where individuals engaging with content in immersive digital channels like Oculus Rift will need to declare how they want their data accessed before viewing?

Join us on April 22nd, where we'll explore how ethics is moving from academia to the forefront of manufacturing technology and journalism. Whereas our personal data typically reflects the "what" of who we are (demographics, actions we take online), ethics reflects the "why" regarding the deeper reasons we make the choices we do.

Our Panel:

Aaron is a frequent speaker and author in the area of privacy and technology, and is a contributing author in Foleys book, Big Data: A Business and Legal Guide.

Focusing on questions of how ethical issues are shaping legal precedents surrounding artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and media today, this panel will provide a practical perspective on how we can evolve the conversation around personal data from privacy to control in light of the deeper values that drive our lives.

The panel will be followed by Q&As from the audience and then on to networking and drinks supplied by the organizers. As time allows, we'll also hear updates from the Internet Identity Workshop (IIW) happening April 7-9th.

We look forward to seeing you there, and please pass the word!
