The Neuroscience of Goal & Habit Design: Goal hierarchies & how to structure goals to lead to habits

Habits are inherently linked to goals. Insofar as they are unconscious, they are remnants of goals & desires we pursued in the past (and may or may not want to continue). We often talk about them in the context of behavior change: as new habits, wed like to develop or old habits wed like to amend. However, in our eagerness to design & implement a habit, we sometimes lose track or poorly define the goal(s) that got us thinking of the habit in the first place.

The Neuroleadership Institute (NLI) has released a Framework for Goal Pursuit (AIM) which organizes existing theories into a unified framework & moves beyond them by importing knowledge from neuroscience to each phase of goal pursuit. Within this framework, the concept of a goal hierarchy is key in the middle (integration) step of goal pursuit which emphasizes the importance of keeping a connection between ones tangible daily activities & the more ambiguous & long-term objectives of ones goal. In this talk, Josh will describe what goal hierarchies are, how to structure goals that lead to habits, how to reclaim our habits for our goals, & perhaps, ultimately align them with our notions of self.
