This talk by Spotify Chapter Lead Chris Angove will illustrate how Spotify is organized around empowering engineers to excel. It will cover the strategies Spotify uses to improve organization structure as well as non-linear career development paths.

Short description:

Spotify has created a matrix structure designed to achieve team autonomy without losing economies of scale. While work flows from the self-managing team, the Chapter provides a mechanism to foster consistency, support and care of an engineering practice. Because of this autonomy engineers are not defined by their level but rather what they are doing. This empowers people to take chances, try new things and figure out ways to make an impact. However, this does present a challenge on career development. This talk will cover these challenges and the strategies Spotify is using to help engineers achieve mastery, purpose and autonomy.

About the speaker:

Chris Angove is a Chapter Lead at Spotify in New York City, where he works with a team of backend engineers on the services powering the music streaming service. Since graduating from the University of Michigan he has spent over a decade working with various teams to make high quality software from network simulation tools, education software and now in the music streaming sphere. He has spent the last 6 years focusing on building DevOps teams to build stable, scalable and performant services and platforms for client applications. He joined Spotify in August 2013 where he has been working to grow the team of backend and quality engineering teams as well as focusing on continuous integration and continuous delivery and its impact on quality.
