Talk Abstract:

What is a background job processor? How does it work? Working with Rails, & using background job tools (such as Sidekiq) left me with these unanswered questions As a remedy I decided to build one from scratch! What better way to learn & understand than by doing?

In my presentation I will talk about the following topics:

Building a background job processor from scratch

Working with concurrency & parallelism

Performance considerations of multithreading vs creating multiple processes

What queueing system to use & why

The impact of using JRuby with such a tool

Workerholic- a Background Job Processor built in Ruby

Presentation #2: Terraforming (~35 mins)

Jimmy McGill, VP of Engineering at Button

Former Googler, Australian native, & woodworking enthusiastic, Jimmy is obsessed with pulling together technologies that reduce the time it takes to move from idea to impact.

Talk Abstract:

Terraforming - no longer just the central plot device to Star Trek II: Wrath Of Khan! Terraform is an open-source project which provides a declarative system to manage infrastructure in AWS, Google Cloud & eventually any provider with an API. Learn about the advantages of managing resources from your text editor, not your browser, the internals of the system, & how Terraform can help you be a more effective full stack developer.
