Talk Title: Machine Learning for Hackers
Abstract: In this talk, I'll review the basic ideas of machine learning and show how simple methods developed by researchers can be treated as black-box function calls by using several existing languages like R and Python. We'll work through the intuitions behind linear regression, logistic regression and k-nearest neighbors and show how they might be applied in common situations like spam classification.
About John: John Myles White is one of the two authors of the book "Machine Learning for Hackers", published by O'Reilly. Currently, he is a Ph.D. student in the Princeton Psychology Department, where he studies decision-making. John is also actively involved in the statistical programming community and has written several popular R packages, including ProjectTemplate and log4r. His new primary interest is preparing the Julia language for use in statistical computing.

Talk Title: Knewton Adaptive Learning Platform
Abstract: Knewton is a technology company that uses data to continuously personalize online learning content for individual students. The platform is continuously adaptive, meaning it responds in real time to each students activity on the system and adjusts to provide the most relevant content. The platform refines its recommendations through network effects that harness the power of all the data collected, for all students, to optimize learning for each individual student.

He has over 12 years of development and management experience in creating highly performant software systems in the financial and engineering industries.
