EVENT DETAILS
IoT Week is a technical event designed to show you how to get started with the Internet of Things (IoT). We'll help new & experienced developers learn how to get the most out of connecting & reliably scaling billions of IoT devices in the cloud. We will highlight best practices using the cloud for IoT applications, connecting devices with AWS IoT, & using AWS endpoints. Join us for technical sessions, live demos, workshops, hackathon, & a networking event with AWS technical experts, partners & your peers.

Agenda

Getting Started & Best Practices with AWS IoT | Tuesday, July 18 | 1:00PM-4:15PM

1:00PM-2:00PM | Essential Capabilities of an IoT Platform: The IoT is here to stay. As with any other trend in the history of computer software, it's starting to produce a new generation of cloud platforms. This tech talk will identify & explain what to look for when evaluating an IoT cloud platform to ensure a successful deployment of IoT strategies. Level 200

2:00PM-3:00PM | Deep Dive on the IoT at AWS: AWS IoT is a managed cloud platform that lets connected devices easily & securely interact with cloud applications & other devices. As an IoT developer, you will want to interact with AWS services like Kinesis, Lambda, & Amazon Machine Learning to get the most from your IoT application. In this session, we will do a deep dive on how to define rules in the Rules Engine, or retrieve the last known & desired state of device using Device Shadows, learn about the use cases & benefits of AWS Greengrass, & routing data from devices to AWS services to leverage the entire cloud for your Internet of Things application. Level 200

3:00PM-3:15PM | Break

3:15PM-4:15PM | AWS Greengrass Technical Deep Dive with Demo: Learn how the technology behind AWS Greengrass works & how it fits into your IoT strategy. Let us guide you through all the technical aspects & requirements for getting AWS Greengrass setup & provide details on how to incorporate other key services such as AWS IoT, AWS Lambda, & Amazon API Gateway. Then, walk through our LoRa Nano Gateway demo with AWS IoT & AWS Greengrass to see these services in action. Level 200 (Note: AWS Greengrass is generally available)

IoT Deep Dive Workshops | Wednesday, July 19 | 10:00AM-6:00PM

10:00AM-Noon | Rapid Prototyping with AWS IoT & Mongoose OS on ESP32 Platform: Mongoose OS is a modern open-source real-time operating system for variety of MCU architectures.
It has the same look & feel on a broad spectrum of supported microcontrollers.
It is also designed from the ground up for connected devices. In this session, we will teach you how to connect to AWS IoT from a device in under 3 minutes & then walk through how to use crypto-element for securing TLS communication & deploy fully functional thermostat with CloudFormation template, utilizing AWS IoT, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Cognito, & Amazon S3. Level 300

Noon-1:00PM | Lunch Break (Lunch will be provided)

1:00PM-6:00PM: Alexa IoT Skills workshop: Alexa, the voice service that powers Amazon Echo, provides capabilities, or skills, that enable customers to interact with devices in a more intuitive way using voice. Examples of capabilities through the Alexa Voice Service include the ability to play music, answer general questions, set an alarm or timer, & more.

The Alexa Skills Kit is a collection of self-service APIs, tools, documentation & code samples that make it fast & easy for you to add skills to Alexa. You can also use the Smart Home Skill API, a recent addition to the Alexa Skills Kit, to easily teach Alexa how to control your smart lighting & thermostat devices.

At this workshop, an Alexa Solutions Architect will be onsite to help you code & easily build & add new capabilities (skills) to Alexa.

Why You Should Learn to create Alexa Skills
Once certified, your new skills will be published in the Alexa app which will in & of itself be a great addition to your portfolio.
Second, you'll gain experience with three services: Amazon's Alexa Skills Kit, AWS Lambda (part of Amazon Web Services), & the NodeJS backend JavaScript framework.
