Tour de Finance: Angel Investing (Session #2 of 9 part year-long series)

Once you've put in some of your own money, raised some from family and friends, and can demonstrate some progress, it's time to find one or more angel investors. The session will dive into the dos and don'ts of securing angel investments. After attending this event you'll know where to look for funding, what to ask for, and mistakes to avoid.

Our speakers have have broad experience in being an angel investor, working with networks of angels, raising money from angels, and how to structure your angel round (or rounds) so that your company is attractive to venture capital investors later on.

Doors open at 6:00PM for networking, program starts at 6:30PM. Light food and drinks will be served.


Vanessa Pestritto, Program Director, New York Angels

Vanessa Pestritto is Program Director of New York Angels. She manages deal flow and the investor experience. Her work has led to an increase in member engagement, community participation and overall investment activity.

After NYU Stern, she worked in technology management consulting on product development as a business lead. She then managed art organizations where she restructured operations, marketing and managed sales. She currently is a Mentor for the NYU Berkley Venture Competition, BrainTrust Advisor for Entrepreneurs@Athena, was named a Top Latino Tech Leader by the New America Alliance and blogs at IamVP.com.

Nathalie Molina Nio, Strategist, Athena Center

Keith Ferrazzi called her a super-connector in his updated best-selling classic, Never Eat Alone. Nathalie Molina Nio (@nathaliemolina) is the fuel core of a network that makes it easy for her to tap the resources to get stuff done, and done quickly. Most recently Molina Nio co-founded Entrepreneurship@Athena at the Athena Center for Leadership studies of Barnard College at Columbia University, with the mission of leveling the playing field for women entrepreneurs.

She is a consummate intra & entrepreneur who launched her first tech startup at the age of 20. Molina Nio took time off recently to complete a degree in playwriting at Columbia University, because she believes the single most important skill in business is storytelling. Involved in launching and growing a multinational business with Lionbridge (NASDAQ: LIOX) into a $100M operation within 6 years, Molina Nio has advised industry leaders in both the for- and nonprofit
sector ranging from multinationals (Disney, Microsoft, MTV, The Discovery Channel, Mattel), early stage startups (Cranium, Onvia) and non-profits (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, World Affairs Council, Seattle International Film Festival, Hedgebrook).

Mary Juetten, Founder and CEO, Traklight

Mary Juetten has dedicated her almost 30-year career to helping businesses achieve and protect their success. Specializing in leading companies in transition or early-stage and helping them create sustainable, operational, and financial growth. Mary wants all small and medium businesses to have Fortune 500 style software solutions. Using her extensive education including Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill and a Juris Doctorate from Arizona State, as well as her US and Canadian accounting and public accountant certifications, Mary created the only self-guided software platform that provides a roadmap for businesses to identify and protect their assets, including a dynamic intellectual property (IP) strategy. Lou PIzzileo, Partner, Grassi & Co.

Lou Pizzileo, CPA, is an Audit Partner at Grassi & Co. Lou serves early stage and middle market companies, both public and privately held, in the software, digital media and telecommunication industries. Lou assists his clients in many roles, from advising start-up technology companies in areas such as accounting for stock compensation and financings, to helping post-IPO clients navigate the SEC reporting requirements and audit process. Lou has more than 15 years of diversified public accounting experience. Earlier in his career, Lou worked for two Big 4 firms and as a part of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB).

Jim Bourke, Partner, WithumSmith+Brown

Jim is a partner and director based in WithumSmith+Brown's Red Bank office and is partner-in-charge of Firm Technology. In that capacity, he has the responsibility for overseeing all technology issues and operations for the Firm's thirteen offices and over 450 employees. Jim gives direction and vision to a group of talented internal technology professions whose job it is to keep the Firm functional 24/7. His responsibilities consist of network design and implementation, Internet connectivity solutions, wireless network configuration, technology strategic planning, as well as overseeing the acquisition, implementation and training of new applications and technologies throughout the Firm. Jim is also responsible for the Firm's annual technology budget.
