Every storage system has its tradeoffs, whether its in data model, queriability, transactionality, or supportability. In a world in which there seems to be dozens of NoSQL databases to choose from, how do you know the right one to pick for a greenfield project? Sometimes the only way to get enough experience is to try one that fits the immediate need, see how well it works, and expose the application requirements.

Bob Pasker had chosen MongoDB because it had tremendous support in the industry, a rich query language, and it stores data in his applications native format: JSON. But it soon became apparent that he could not easily overcome two competing problems: the lack of native multi-document transactions and idiosyncratic query support for nested array attributes. So he did what any self-respecting technologist would do: he searched for a better solution.

Come to this meetup to get anintimate look at migration from MongoDB to FoundationDB. A presentation from a FoundationDB engineer will likely follow.

Bob has 35 years of technology development experience, from kernel programming in assembly and transaction processing systems on Wall Street, to authoring the first large-scale Java application: the WebLogic Application Server, which launched a multi-billion dollar industry. His first open source project was released in 1984 and, in 1994, was featured in an article in "2600: The Hacker Quarterly." He has served as CTO, VP of Engineering, and Chief Architect of 7 different companies across the industry, as advisor and angel investor at over 20 more, and was CTO-in-Residence at Azure Capital Partners (2005-2009) and Accel Partners (2011). Currently, Bob is the founder and head of development for Tengah. He holds a B.A. (Honors), magna cum laude, from San Francisco State University, and an M.A. in History from Brown University.
