EVENT DETAILS

WHEN

Tuesday August 2nd 10:00am-3:00pm
Wednesday August 3rd 10:00am-3:00pm

You must be able to attend both days of the session to participate. Lunch will be served both days.

WHAT

Ice cream consumption linked to incidence of drowning ... Higher rates of margarine consumption correlated with divorce rates in Maine ... Children score higher on the SAT when they have more TV sets at home ...

Statistical analysis underlies many of the conclusions we can draw from scientific studies. It is imperative that students today develop at least a conceptual, applied understanding of statistics. This can aid experimental design and data analysis for science fair or laboratory exercises in the classroom. And, arguably more importantly, it can also facilitate a healthy skepticism of sensationalized media headlines and spurious correlations.

In this professional development course, we will dissect some examples of statistics in science (both through media and primary research sources), explore some resources for teaching statistics in the classroom, and work collaboratively to incorporate elements of statistics into your current classroom and/or laboratory exercises.

In order to order supplies in advance, we must hold your spot with afully refundablecheck for $60.00. Upon completion of the course, the check will be returned to you; however, your check will be cashed if you fail to attend. Checks must bereceivedby July 19th(2 weeks before the event).
