August: Multidimensional Maps and Happy Birthday OSM!

This month we'll be hearing about projects visualizing digital maps in the third, and sometimes fourth, dimension. (The alternate mirrorverse meetup will address dimensions 5-7.) This August also marks OpenStreetMap's tenth year of existence, which will be recognized with CAKE and possibly balloons.

Join us and follow the conversation at #geonyc for the latest updates.

OUR SPEAKERS

Rachel Binx [@rachelbinx] is a data visualizer, developer, designer, and mathematician. She co-founded Meshu and Gifpop. Previously, she worked as a design technologist for Stamen Design. Rachel will discuss the geo considerations that went into building Meshu, as well as showing a sneak preview of a new project that she's been working on. More about Rachel at rachelbinx.com.

Patricio Gonzalez Vivo [@patriciogv] is a Brooklyn artist and graphic developer who explores interstitial spaces between organic and synthetic, analog and digital, individual and collective. Patricio will be talking about Skylines, a project exploring the invisible information of a city usually trapped inside corporate databases. Learn more at patriciogonzalezvivo.com.

Russell Varriale [@RussellVarriale] is Co-Founder @ Vrban, a virtual reality startup making it possible to easily turn 3D models into virtual environments. Self-described technophile and space nerd, if you like mapping the cosmos, or just talking about exoplanets, he's interested.

Brett Camper [@professorlameza] and Peter Richardson [@meetar] will be talking about Tangram, a a library for dynamic client-side map rendering with WebGL. Brett is a co-founder of Mapzen, an open source mapping lab in NYC, and previously managed product and engineering teams at Kickstarter, MIT, and elsewhere. Peter is a recovering animator, interested in art, code, math, and other things. He makes open-source 3D maps at Mapzen.
