Working together across geographic distance is much more challenging than working together when collocated. In this talk, we bring three decades of research to bear on understanding why this is the case. Our results are applicable to the special challenges when you are part of a distributed UX project. We will review the factors that make distance UX work challenging, like having the UX researchers & designers far from the developers. For each of these factors there's a remedy. For example, there are ways to build common ground & trust, important for the smooth communication between team members with disparate backgrounds & skills. In addition, there are several online tools, one of which we developed, that can diagnose the specific challenges for a team trying to work across distance, helping them focus on remedying their unique problems. We end with a set of practical tips on how to make your distance work work better.
