Job Description
The Gawker Media Group is the publisher of some of the web's best-loved brands and communities, including the eponymous Gawker and gadget sensation Gizmodo. Our proprietary publishing platform supports the interaction of uncompromisingly authentic editorial voices, exceptionally opinionated audiences, and bespoke brand advertising programs. About the Role
We're looking for someone to own the MySQL portion of our environment. As the primary store of all our data this is a crucial role in keeping the business running and building for growth. This position will have one foot in the operations world managing the cluster and one foot in the development world helping to design and grow the database. We're an aggressively paced low-overhead organization (do it live) so the MySQL DBA needs to have a keen understanding of capacity planning and making live operational changes.
Responsibilities
manage & support our 8 live and 1 test mysql servers (currently doing a combined ~70K queries per second)
expand (double) the cluster to our second datacenter and work out the failover process
handle the nagios/cacti/other monitoring of the mysql servers
work with the developers to evolve the data structure, tables, indexes and queries
run regular alters on the live environment
work with the developers to sort out connection pooling and loadbalancing
work with the support vendor (Percona) to handle mysteries, upgrades, ad-hoc consulting work, etc
own the backup and recovery process, including regular fire-drill testing
automate the process of rebuilding a slave
automate the process of failing over between masters
regular reviews & audits of slow queries
About You (two or more)
3+ years experience in the tech group at a high-traffic website
1+ years experience being the person primarily responsible for a mysql database cluster
thorough understanding of replication, backups & restore
lots of my.cnf tweaking and innodb tuning war stories
experience in a continuous deployment 10+ deploys-a-day environment
experience getting 20K+ queries per second out of a given server
familiarity with the percona toolset and working with percona support
