Data/Tech for Longevity is kicking off their speaker series with Keith Comito.

This talk will be an overview of the emerging field of longevity biotechnology, why it is important that this emergence is happening socio-economically, & how various computer & technology skills can play an important role: both in the field at large, & specifically in their initiatives at LEAF/Lifespan.io.

Bio: Keith Comito is a computer programmer, mathematician, & President of the Life Extension Advocacy Foundation (LEAF), whose work brings together a variety of disciplines to provoke thought & promote social change. In addition to leading advocacy efforts for the increase of healthy human lifespan, he has helped create high-profile mobile applications such as HBO NOW & Disney+, video games, bioinformatics programs, musical applications, & biotech projects featured in Forbes & NPR. Seeing age-related disease as one of the most profound problems facing humanity, he works to accelerate & democratize longevity research efforts through initiatives such as Lifespan.io & LeafScience.org. He has earned a B.S. in Mathematics, B.S. in Computer science, & M.S. in Applied Mathematics at Hofstra University.

Preparation: None required except for your curiosity, & any questions you might have about how your existing or desired tech skills can impact the field of longevity-focused biotechnology. Familiarity with initiatives (Lifespan.io/learn) is a bonus.

Regarding projects: There are 2 projects from lifespan.io (https://www.morelife.tech/projects).

Project: Wordpress developmentCombine 2 sites (https://www.leafscience.org/ & https://www.lifespan.io/) & add additional features to turn it into a true community hub for aging research information, advocacy, & research support. They will include features such as those similar to change.org, ways to orchestrate crowdsourced clinical trials, & more persistent communication/collaboration options for the users of the site.

Project: Data visualizationThis would be using technologies such as D3 to make very clear & engaging infographics to clearly showcase current budgetary failings, demographics & economic trends relating to societal aging, etc. that make plain the need for significantly altered priorities at the national & international levels regarding aging research funding & focus. This is currently lacking, & something with the potential to have a profound effect on currently existing dialogues around policies such as medicare-for-all.
