John Langfordis amachine learningresearch scientist, a field which he says "is shifting from an academic discipline to an industrial tool".He is the author of thewebloghunch.netand the principal developer ofVowpal Wabbit. John works atMicrosoft ResearchNew York, of which he was one of the founding members, & was previously affiliated withYahoo! Research, Toyota Technological Institute, andIBM's Watson Research Center. He studiedPhysicsandComputer Scienceat theCalifornia Institute of Technology, earning a double bachelor's degree in 1997, & received hisPh.D.in Computer Science fromCarnegie Mellon Universityin 2002. He was the program co-chair for the 2012 International Conference on Machine Learning.

John will discuss a multiyear (and multiperson) research project to create real world interactive learning from the foundational theory to a standardized system which anyone can use with several deployments. These techniques & tools expand the scope of machine learning solvable problems to include many new interactive contextual control problems such as personalized news, user interpretation, & wellness.
