Before moving to the Icahn School of Medicine in 2013, he was the founding director ofboth the Center for Prostate Cancer at Weill Cornell Medical College & the LeFrak Center forRobotic Surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Tewari was the Ronald P. Lynch endowedChair of Urologic Oncology & the hospital's Director of Robotic Prostatectomy, treating patientswith prostate, urinary bladder & other urological cancers. He is a world leadingurological surgeon, & has performed over 7,500 robotically assisted procedures using the da VinciSurgical System.
Academically, Dr. Tewari is recognized as a world-renowned expert on urologic oncology with over250 peer reviewed published papers to his credit; he is on such lists as America's Top Doctors, NewYork Magazine's Best Doctors, & Who's Who in the World. In 2012, he was presented withthe American Urological Association Gold Cystoscope Award for "outstanding contributions to the field of urologic oncology, most notably the treatment of prostate cancer & the development ofnovel techniques to improve the outcomes of robotic prostatectomy."
Dr. Sunil Agrawal -Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Rehabilitation/Regenerative Medicine at Columbia University
Sunil K. Agrawal has developed a highly visible interdisciplinary program in rehabilitation robotics involving faculty from School of Engineering & Applied Sciences & College of Physician & Surgeons at Columbia University. Neural disorders, such as stroke & Parkinson's disease, limit the ability of humans to walk & perform activities of daily living. Pediatric disorders such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, & Down's syndrome delay the development of children & pose many functional limitations. Old age diminishes the sensory & motor systems.Through a range of pilot & clinical studies involving human subjects, Dr. Agrawal has showed that novel training robots can help humans to relearn, restore, or improve functional movements.
Dr. Agrawal has active collaborations with faculty in the departments of Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Pediatric Orthopedics, Otolaryngology, Geriatrics, & Psychiatry. Aselected listof these ongoing studies are: (i) Perturbation training of the elderly using a Tethered Pelvic Assist Device (TPAD), (ii) Gait training of stroke patients with asymmetric forces, (iii) Balance training of children with cerebral palsy, (iv) Gait characterization of patients with vestibular disorders, (v) Balance Training of Parkinson patients, (vi) Novel neck braces for assistance & training of patients with head drop, (vii) Novel dynamic spine braces for patients with scoliosis. These studies are funded by grants from National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Spinal Cord Injury Research Board, & others.
