Celebrate WorldPride at Newsela's A Mile In Our Shoes Speaker Series with stories & lessons from the last decade of NYC Pride.
About this Event
As the world descends upon NYC for WorldPride, join Newsela & Chris Frederick (the Executive Director behind NYC's iconic Pride March) as we discuss parades, politics, & what it takes to put on the mega production surrounding Pride. We'll get a behind-the-scenes look at a decade's worth of stories & lessons in activism, inclusion, & tenacity to honor LGBTQIA+ history 50 years after the Stonewall Riots.

This edition of Newsela's A Mile In Our Shoes Speaker Series continues to build on using the power of personal stories to positively change our world, promote empathy & inclusivity, & spark new ideas in the tech & media industry. We're excited to explore what it means to truly celebrate the diversity of the queer community. In addition to discussing how to navigate politics, red tape, & celebrity whims, we'll learn how Chris & his team helped nurture a non-profit from grassroots activism to taking center stage in an effort to advance the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.

About the Speaker

Since 2009, Chris Frederick has served as the Executive Director of NYC Pride & Heritage of Pride, the nonprofit organization that plans & produces New York City's official LGBTQIA+ Pride events each year to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969 - the beginning of the modern Gay Rights movement.

Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the 2019 WorldPride celebrations in NYC are expected to draw about 4.5 million people from around the world. For the last decade, Chris & his team have been working tirelessly to amplify & elevate NYC Pride festivities, & prepare for this year's WorldPride hosted in NYC. What started as a march in 1970 has grown into a month of events that inspire, educate, commemorate, & celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community.
