EVENT DETAILS
Bloomberg, Cornell Tech, & Tech:NYC invite you to join us for the latest installment of the Cornell Tech @ Bloomberg series, featuring Melanie Whelan, CEO of SoulCycle, in conversation with Scarlet Fu of Bloomberg Television.

SoulCycle launched in 2006 with the mission of bringing Soul to the people - injecting fun, inspiration, & community into the workout experience. Its instructor-led, music-heavy, group indoor cycling classes have since attracted legions of devoted customers in its home city of New York & beyond.

Melanie Whelan attended her first SoulCycle class at the company's Upper West Side studio in 2008, while she was running corporate development for Equinox. In 2011, SoulCycle sold a majority stake of its company to Equinox, and, in 2012, Whelan became its COO. She joined SoulCycle when it had 22 employees & was elevated to CEO in 2015.

She has led SoulCycle's growth to more than 90 locations in 18 different markets & is preparing for a 2019 launch in London. Under her tenure, the business has expanded to include a media division, a talent agency for fitness instructors, & additional class formats - including live concert sessions.

We hope you'll join us for this conversation, in which Whelan will discuss her vision for SoulCycle's future with Fu, how it inspires such devotion in its customers, what the company is doing to bring them the SoulCycle experience outside the studio, & why you shouldn't call it a fitness company.

Melanie Whelan is Chief Executive Officer of SoulCycle. During her tenure, which began in 2015, Melanie has driven SoulCycle's successful growth with an intent focus on innovation & hospitality. She has increased the Company's geographic footprint to more than 90 studios in 18 markets across the U.S. & Canada. Prior to her role as CEO, Melanie served as the brand's Chief Operating Officer from 2012.

Before joining SoulCycle, Melanie was Vice President of Business Development at Equinox, where she was responsible for developing & executing brand & business extension initiatives. She also held prior leadership positions with Virgin Management, where she was on the founding team of Virgin America, & with Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

Melanie graduated from Brown University with a degree in engineering & economics. Melanie lives in downtown New York City. When she's not spending time with her husband & two children, she can usually be found riding at SoulCycle.
