Talk 1: Building a Columnar Query Engine

In order to help our analysts fight spam on Pinterest, we built a column-oriented data store & query engine that scans events on the platform. Think BigQuery with the ability to take action on both past & future results. We'll talk about how we use BEAM to store billions of events & analyze them in real time.

About the Speaker

Preston Guillory is a software engineer on the Protect team at Pinterest. He works on infrastructure for fighting spam, fraud, & other forms of abuse that make the world a less pleasant place to be.

Talk 2: A Distributed Application for Force Scanning

Sparta's scanning software connects to force plates & reads information that is used to predict the risk of a sports injury & maximize performance. Their distributed application for creating force scans uses a main hosted Elixir/Phoenix web application together with hundreds of distributed laptops. Each of them is directly connected to a force plate, runs its own Elixir/Phoenix application, & "talks" to the main web application via Phoenix Channels. Channels are leveraged extensively to transmit live scan info, force data, & commands in real time. In this talk, Greg will describe the technical challenges of building & maintaining such a distributed application, along with the lessons learned.

Sparta has clients in the NFL, NBA, major league baseball, pro soccer, various university teams, the military, & also in medical applications.

About the Speaker

Greg Woodward oversees technology design & development as CTO at Sparta Science, & specializes dynamics & kinematics, together with agile development methodologies, with over 25 years of commercial software development experience. Before Sparta, Greg was CTO of NASDAQ Private Market (NPM) where he led their agile development team, prior to that, he was CTO at SharesPost, & before that Greg was VP of engineering at various technology startups in the Bay Area. Greg graduated 1st in his class at Texas A&M University with a BS in mechanical engineering, & received MS & PhD degrees in ME from Stanford University, where his research involved the use of tethered satellites with the space shuttle.
