Beyond the banal corporate registrations & financial statements, there are many bizarre insights to be gleaned from public data. From an inventory of dead animals found in NYC parks, to an email from a My Little Pony collector immortalized in the text of a government contract, countless curiosities abound that provide data aficionados with intrigue & inspiration. In this talk, youll learn about a few of these curiosities & their origins, & techniques to uncover your own treasures.
Speaker bio
Abe Rubenstein is a senior software engineer who leads development of Enigma Public, a search & discovery platform for open data. He is also an instructor in the Spatial Analysis & Visualization Initiative (SAVI) at Pratt Institute. Abe's interests include exploring randomness in creative computation & teaching programming to non-engineers. In his free time he enjoys co-organizing GeoNYC, a meetup around technical & social aspects of maps.
