The new economy is about creators, more so than builders, & creation starts with an idea. Ideas take many forms, but all fall under the umbrella of intellectual capital. Ideas can be you company's most valuable asset, but can also be the hardest to manage & protect. Please join NYC Startup Academy to learn more about how companies & entrepreneurs can think about how best to nurture & manage intellectual capital as they grow their businesses. We will welcome Intellectual Property Professor Jeanne Curtis to lead us through the basic - & subtle - best principles for managing intellectual capital.

Jeanne C. Curtis has specialized in intellectual property law since she began practicing in 1991. She has been recognized by her peers & media outlets for both her work as a practitioner & as a professor.
Most recently, Jeanne C. Curtis was a member of the faculty of Cardozo Law School where, in addition to her teaching responsibilities, Ms. Curtis was the inaugural director of the Google- funded Patent Diversity Project. The Patent Diversity Project was created with the goal of increasing the number of U.S. patents issued to women & underserved minorities. As inaugural director, Ms. Curtis built the Project from the ground up, taking the Project mission & making it a reality. Leveraging a deep bench of relationships in the legal community, she created a nationwide network of law firms willing to provide pro bono patent prosecution services. She mined the demand for these services through a variety of methods, including educational programming & outreach geared toward entrepreneurs & founders. Ms. Curtis's work has received recognition across a number of outlets including by media such as Bloomberg Law & Law 360.
Before joining Cardozo, Ms. Curtis spent more than 20 years in private practice specializing in patent litigation; Ms. Curtis also handled antitrust matters. Ms. Curtis was a partner at Fish & Neave LLP & then at Ropes & Gray LLP upon its merger with Fish & Neave. She tried numerous patent cases & handled all aspects of pre-and post-trial activities in federal courts around the country. Ms. Curtis also counseled clients on the creation & use of their intellectual property including opinion work, best practices, & strategic considerations. Ms. Curtis's clients were varied in size & resources & that has contributed to the nature & breadth of her experience. Ms. Curtis also held numerous firm leadership positions at Fish & Neave & Ropes & Gray, including a multi-year rotation head as a department head of the litigation department at Ropes & Gray & as a member of the steering committee of Ropes & Gray's Women's Forum.
Jeanne's skills as a litigator have been recognized by her peers many times over the years, through for example, inclusion in New York Super Lawyers, publication of articles & book chapters, as a regular speaker on intellectual property topics, & as an inaugural member of the Hon. William C. Conner Inn of Court.
For the past 4 years, Ms. Curtis has also been teaching pretrial patent litigation as an adjunct professor at the University of New Hampshire School of Law (formerly Franklin Pierce).
Jeanne has consistently been described as an excellent mentor. Through all her years of private practice & in academia as well, she excelled in teaching the substantive & practical aspects of intellectual property law as well as fostering the professional development of associates & students alike.
Jeanne received her J.D. from Boston University School of Law. Jeanne attended Boston University for her undergraduate studies as well where she received a B.A. in mathematics
