Every product's success is measured by the target objective it was intended to meet. To track our progress towards that objective, we form measurable metrics that provide us the required visibility of the same, in an incremental (mostly numeric) manner. These metrics are indeed important, not denying that. But the product manager's sole target itself should not be to meet those metrics - but rather consider them just a unidimensional measurement part of a bigger holistic goal being chased - the outcome or overall impact of the product.
