Hey GeoNYC! As the weather gets warmer & the days get longer, we all look for reasons to be outside--whether for work or pleasure. Numerous agencies & organizations in NYC leverage the power of geography, GIS, & spatial analysis tools & methods to measure, monitor, & catalog the great outdoors, whether it's the natural or concrete jungles.

This month's presenters will share their projects & experiences on mapping different outdoor elements of NYC. Presentations will take us from mapping natural elements, to cultural elements, to the communities themselves.

Speakers:
-----Michael Treglia, PhD // The Nature Conservancy @MikeTreglia @nature_ny

Green roofs can provide myriad benefits. However, without a thorough understanding of where green roofs are in New York City, it is impossible to answer questions like what are their total benefits, & where? & who is & isnt benefitting from green roofs? Mike has been working to fill this data gap, & will highlight mapping methods & results on this work to date. Check out more of his work at: mltconsecol.github.io !

-----Tova Perlman // Student @Tperlzy

Tova Perlman is a recent graduate of Brandeis University majoring in Art History. Over this past year, Tova collected street artwork locations & mapped them to note any patterns or interesting features. Through visual analysis, she learned more about Boston street artwork & how GIS can be helpful to the public artwork community. Check out Tova's profile at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tova-perlman-64a6a7155/ !

-----Erica Rothman & Daniel Watts // NYC Department of Landmarks & Preservation @nyclandmarks

As many local NYC-ers may know, NYC LPC manages & maintains numerous historic sites throughout the city. What you may not know is that they also generate numerous digital educational materials for the public to learn more about the historic sites around them. During this week's session, the team at LPC will be sharing their latest Story Map on Harlem.

-----Clara Holmes // NYC Department of Parks & Recreation @NYCParks //

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), a highly destructive forest pest, has arrived in New York City, threatening to kill the roughly 90,000 ash trees in our Natural Areas. In an effort to track the infestations & impacts of EAB, NYC Parks' Natural Resources Group is using ArcGIS Online as well as iNaturalist. These differing data platforms offer various solutions to track & manage this forest problem. Clara Holmes is a Field Scientist with NYC Parks' Natural Resources group, specializing in vegetation monitoring.

-----Erika Kamptner & Kristen Grady // NYC Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications // @NYCDoITT
-----Annarita Macri // NYC Department of Parks & Recreation // @NYCParks

The New York City 2017 LiDAR acquisition project has been coordinated between the NYC Mayors Office of Resiliency & Recovery (ORR), Department of Parks & Recreation (Parks), & the Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications (DoITT). The project includes the capture of airborne topographic & bathymetric LiDAR & will result in the development of several LiDAR-derived products, including combined topobathymetric digital elevation models (DEMs), hydro-enforced DEMs & high-resolution land cover datasets. The derived LiDAR products are a much-needed update to the 2010 LiDAR capture & will allow several agencies to better address various planning & analysis initiatives. Throughout this project, DoITT has been responsible for citywide project management, quality assurance of data deliverables, & final storage/dissemination of deliverables. In this talk, DoITT will provide an overview of the LiDAR project, & DoITT & Parks will discuss their efforts to coordinate QA/QC during the pilot area phase of the project to ensure high quality data products.

Agenda:
6:30 // Networking, pizza, beer & soda
