One founder will pitch their business to this month's guest VCs, John Borthwick, Matthew Hartman & Peter Rojas from Betaworks Ventures, followed by a discussion with the VC on their thoughts, suggestions, & what they look for in a pitch.



One Betaworks Studios member will be chosen to pitch their company.

John Borthwick has been a leader & early-stage investor in New York technology for over two decades. As founder & CEO of Betaworks, John has led the company building & investment process since 2008. Companies built by Betaworks include Giphy, Dots, bitly, & Chartbeat.



Previously, he was SVP of Alliances & Technology Strategy for Time Warner; CEO of Fotolog, one of the first social photo sharing sites; & head of AOL's product development studio after they acquired his first company, WP Studio, one of Silicon Alley's first content studios.



He currently serves on the boards of WNYC, New York Public Radio, Data & Society, Giphy, Dots, & Blade. John holds an MBA from Wharton & a BA in Economics from Wesleyan University.

Matthew Hartman is a partner at Betaworks Ventures, based in New York City. Matt started his career building the technology platform for Trammell Crow Company (acquired by CBRE) before joining Hot Potato (acquired by Facebook). He co-founded ReferBoost, a profitable b2b company in the real estate & social media space. Matt studied Cognitive Science at the University of Pennsylvania focusing on computational cognition & holds an MBA & Masters of Engineering Management from the Kellogg School at Northwestern. He is inventor of a patent 8189781, which helps obfuscate images from unwanted download.

Peter Rojas is a partner at Betaworks Ventures, based in San Francisco. Peter is a successful four-time entrepreneur with deep operating experience.



Prior to betaworks ventures, he was VP of Strategy at AOL & co-director of AOL Alpha, the company's experimental products group. Peter was the co-founder of Weblogs (acquired by AOL in 2005), where he created & was the founding editor of tech sites Engadget & Joystiq; music discovery site RCRD LBL; gdgt, a social commerce platform (acquired by AOL in 2013); & gadget blog Gizmodo, the first Gawker Media property (acquired by Univision in 2016).

Peter holds an MA in English Literature from the University of Sussex & a BA in Social Studies from Harvard University.
