Explore the current landscape of film festival distribution opportunities & develop a plan that reflects both the marketplace & your unique goals for your project.

This class is part of our Documentary & Narrative Film Tracks. Take four narrative or documentary film classes for $490 (regular price) or $390 (IFP / Media Center members).

Please note this is a three part class taking place from 6:30-8:30pm on October 18, October 25, & November 1.

With distribution, marketing, & festival opportunities emerging & shifting with unprecedented speed, filmmakers need to develop a strategy for their films that is built upon the concepts of change & flexibility. This workshop will explore the current landscape & help filmmakers develop a plan for their films that not only reflects the marketplace, but the goals & objectives they have set for their work.

In the first class, we'll explore the history of film distribution, self-distribution, & digital platforms with an overview of current opportunities & best practices for filmmakers. The second class gives an overview of film festival structure, opportunities, & how to build a successful festival strategy for your film, your career, & beyond. Finally, the third class will present case studies for independent films that cover their festival & distribution strategies using real-world data. Students will also develop & present a final plan for their own projects to the group during the last class.

The instructor for this class is Tom Hall, the Director of the Montclair Film Festival in Montclair, NJ.
