EVENT DETAILS
An initiative led by the Scottish Space Leadership Council & partners to better understand the environmental impact of the space industry.
About this event
Join us for this exciting event to hear about the Sustainable Space Challenges & to learn more about the positive contribution the space sector makes to the environmental & climate change debate.

The event is open to the public & will be hosted by science broadcaster Dallas Campbell & Dr. Suzie Imber, who will highlight the importance of ongoing collaboration around sustainable spacefaring & aim to establish next steps, as we look to COP26 & beyond.

Keynote Speakers:

European Space Agency Director General - Dr Josef Aschbacher
Scotch Whisky Association Head of Sustainability - Morag Garden
European Space Agency Chief Climate & Sustainability Officer - Andrea Vena
Esteemed Judges:

Linda Hanna, CEO at Scottish Enterprise
Richard Dixon, Director of Friends of the Earth Scotland
Dr. Lucy Rogers, Science Author, Inventor & Judge on BBC2's Robot Wars
Andrea Vena, Chief Climate & Sustainability Officer at ESA
Philippa Vigano, Innovative Technologies at NatureScot
Moriba Jah, Director of Computational Astronautical Sciences & Technologies at The University of Texas
ANNOUNCING VALUE OF SPACE PANEL SOON!

Background:

In early 2021, the Sustainable Space Challenges campaign engaged representatives from environmental groups, academia, schools, government & the wider public to urge submissions of environmental & sustainability focussed challenges to the growing & developing UK space sector. The campaign received a high number of submissions that were analysed & rated by a judging panel consisting of organisations such as Scottish Enterprise, Friends of the Earth, NatureScot, the University of Texas at Austin & the European Space Agency.

Three challenges were selected & passed to space sector volunteers to explore collaboratively during a series of workshops, which would ultimately help to better evaluate the carbon footprint of the industry's value chain; satellite manufacturing, launch vehicle production, spaceport activity & satellite data analysis, whilst engaging proactively with environmental groups to identify opportunities to make a positive contribution to wider Net Zero targets.

On June 23rd, the outcomes of the sectoral workshops will be shared with challengers & the judging panel for feedback, in front of an online audience.

Challenges selected:

*Challenge One*

Lead by: Derek Harris (Skyrora) & Luke Vanstone (Science & Technology Facilities Council, part of UK Research & Innovation, at the Higgs Centre for Innovation in Edinburgh)

Identify ways to quantify, classify & assess the human-made space object population, leveraging big data (space & non-space) to better understand the nature of the space debris & orbital carrying capacity problem, whilst working towards the environmental protection of the near-earth space ecosystem.

*Challenge Two*

Lead by: Hina Khan (Spire)

Define a holistic, internationally adoptable approach to measuring the true impact of the space sector (direct & indirect) on the environment, to enable the reduction of carbon emissions & ensure a meaningful contribution towards wider net zero targets.

*Challenge Three*

Lead by: Sue Kee (AAC Clyde Space)

Explore the development of an open & accessible digital library of space data that connects & empowers citizen science initiatives around diverse Earth-based environmental data, to support deeper insight & better decision making from space-sourced information.

We are very excited to welcome you to this event!
