Come learn about how AidData & DataKind are using open data to empower mission-driven organizations as a part of NYC's Open Data Week.
About this Event
Join us for lessons from the front lines, co-presented by AidData & DataKind. This event is part of NYC's 2020 Open Data Week, a week-long festival of community-driven events organized & produced by the NYC Mayor's Office of Data Analytics' Open Data program & BetaNYC.
During this showcase, you'll learn how to search for & download open source data using the GeoQuery tool, which is an online tool that performs advanced spatial statistics that extracts data from open-source datasets. You'll also hear about DataKind's 311 project, a project executed at DataKind's first-ever virtual DataDive, a one-day marathon-style event, through the Microsoft + DataKind AI Accelerator program. DataKind's proof-of-concept prototype will be presented, which identified common issues using 311 data, as well as a framework that could be generalized to other city agencies.
The event will end with an interactive discussion & networking session where attendees will brainstorm ways in which we can address challenges of using open data. For more information about AidData, DataKind, & the speakers, please see below. We hope to see you there!
Seth Goodman is the Data Engineer at AidData & developer of GeoQuery (geoquery.org), a free spatial data platform. At AidData, Seth also leads efforts to apply high performance computing & machine learning techniques to improve our capability to measure, monitor, & evaluate international aid projects. Seth completed his BS & MS in Electrical Engineering at Villanova University, & is currently pursuing a PhD in Computational Geography at William & Mary.
Benjamin Kinsella is a Project Manager at DataKind where he manages & works with pro bono data science projects. He is also a former DataKind volunteer with a background in NLP. Benjamin completed his BA in Business & Economics from the University of Kentucky & his PhD in Spanish linguistics (Bilingualism & SLA) at Rutgers University.
Emily Yelverton is a data scientist in the education & nonprofit sectors. Over three years at DataKind, she has held every volunteer role on projects, spanning multiple subject areas. Emily holds a master's degree in Applied Mathematics from Stevens Institute of Technology.
AidData
AidData is a research lab at William & Mary's Global Research Institute. They equip policymakers & practitioners with better evidence to improve how sustainable development investments are targeted, monitored, & evaluated. AidData is working to break down technological barriers & empower a broad range of data users to produce new & meaningful research & insights using next-generation geospatial data, methods & tools. This includes GeoQuery, a ground-breaking project that enables users without significant computing power or expertise to easily find, access & merge together spatial data from a wide variety of sources.
