Ocean Trailblazers: Explorations, Discoveries, & Technologies of the Deep with Sonya Dyhrman & Maya Tolstoy moderated by Alex Halliday
About this event
The World Ocean is essential to life on Earth. It produces about half of the oxygen that sustains the planet, feeds & employs millions of people, & is pivotal to regulating the climate as it absorbs massive amounts of carbon dioxide. As important as the ocean is, much of it remains underexplored. Join us online for this month's Earth Series Lecture, moderated by the Climate School's Founding Dean, Alex Halliday, in conversation with two of Columbia University's leading ocean explorers, Sonya Dyhrman & Maya Tolstoy.

The Speakers:

Sonya Dyhrman is a Professor of Earth & Environmental Sciences at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University in New York. Her research leverages molecular tools to study the physiological ecology of cyanobacteria & eukaryotic microalgae & their role in shaping marine ecosystem structure, function & biogeochemistry. She graduated with high honors in biology from Dartmouth College & received her PhD in marine biology from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She did her postdoctoral training at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), where she was a tenured member of the scientific staff until she moved to Columbia. She has participated in over 30 research expeditions, & was awarded the Antarctic Service Medal. Dyhrman is an investigator with the Simons Foundation, a two-time Kavli Fellow in the National Academy Frontiers of Science Program, & a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.

Maya Tolstoy is a Professor in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University in New York. She is a marine geophysicist specializing in seafloor earthquakes & volcanoes. Dr. Tolstoy has led 18 research expeditions at sea as Chief or co-Chief Scientist & has 66 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including six in Science & four in Nature. She has led or co-led over $22 million worth of federally funded research, including co-PI for an Ocean Bottom Seismology National Facility for more than a decade, & was part of the leadership team that implemented the largest community marine seismology experiment to date - The Cascadia Initiative. Professor Tolstoy has been teaching in her area of expertise for more than 20 years, including courses at the graduate & undergraduate level in geophysics.

The Moderator:

Alex Halliday is the Founding Dean of the Columbia Climate School & Director of Columbia University's Earth Institute. Halliday has been a pioneer in developing mass spectrometry, helping to shed light on the birth & early development of our solar system, the interior workings of the Earth, & the processes that affect Earth's surface environment. He has received numerous awards, including the Murchison Medal of the Geological Society, the Bowen Award & Hess Medal of the American Geophysical Union, the Urey Medal of the European Association of Geochemistry, & the Oxburgh Medal of the Institute of Measurement & Control. He is a Fellow of the UK's Royal Society & Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences. His contributions to science & innovation have been recognized with the award of a knighthood in the UK. He is the former Vice President of the Royal Society & former President of the Geochemical Society. He has served as an external board member for Britain's Natural Environment Research Council, the Max Planck Society, London's Natural History Museum, the American Geophysical Union, & more.

About Us:

The Earth Institute at Columbia University is the world leader in interdisciplinary climate & sustainability research, policy & teaching. Under the directorship of pioneering geochemist Alex Halliday, PhD the Earth Institute brings together a community of earth & environmental scientists, economists, lawyers, public health specialists & business & policy experts to seek solutions to the planet's most pressing challenges.
