EVENT DETAILS |
Speakers: Emily M. Bender & Alexander Koller
Bios: Emily M. Bender is a Professor at the University of Washington where she is also the director of the Computational Linguistics Laboratory. Alexander Koller is a Professor of Computational Linguistics at Saarland University.
Summary: Emily & Alex will present their paper which recently won the best paper award at ACL 2020 for the theme of the conference, "Taking Stock of Where Weve Been & Where Were Going". They look past the hype of recent neural models which has led to them being described as "understanding" language or capturing "meaning". They argue that a system trained only on form has a priori no way to learn meaning & that a clear understanding of the distinction between form & meaning will help guide the field towards better natural language understanding.
The presentation will be 12 minutes long, in keeping with the presentation given at ACL 2020, & the authors will be available during & after the presentation for questions.
We won't assume that you have read the paper in advance, but it will help if you do! You can find the paper here: https://www.aclweb.org/anthology/2020.acl-main.463/ And an audio version here: https://soundcloud.com/emily-m-bender/climbingtowardsnlu-audiopaper/s-0ZT7112K1Ep
