Presented by Caroline Bauer, Studio Manager of the Mayor's Office of Economic Opportunity, NYC
New York City launched the Service Design Studio at the Mayor's Office for Economic Opportunity (NYC Opportunity), the nation's first municipal design studio dedicated to improving the lives of low-income residents. This talk will introduce you to the Studio & its role inside city government. You'll hear about the different ways that the Studio is working with city agency partners to improve the design & delivery of government services through capacity building & two project case studies.
Caroline Bauer's diverse background has had her working with nonprofits, city agencies & design firms on projects in the built environment. Prior to joining the Service Design Studio, Caroline was directing the Curb Your Litter project to connect businesses, schools & residents in Greenpoint, Brooklyn with resources to become stewards of their own neighborhood. While this seems like an odd connection to the word of service design, solving problems in the complex world of waste management has given her the ability to always keep an eye on the big picture. She has also worked at the Urban Design Forum, the Design Trust for Public Space, & No Longer Empty. Caroline is an AICP certified Urban Planner & the co-founder of the Arts + Culture Committee of the American Planning Association's New York Metro Chapter. She received her M.Sc in Urban Planning from Columbia's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation, & a BA in Anthropology from Mount Holyoke College.
