Becoming a Well-rounded iOS Developer

Isaac Casanova - Senior Software Engineer at JOOR

In the earlier days of iOS engineering, many developers transitioned to writing iOS apps from other fields of software development. Today, new software engineers are choosing to start to their career exclusively in the iOS ecosystem. Is something lost? Are they missing larger context? In this talk, Isaac will go into how he started his career as an iOS engineer, then decided to actively pursue contributing to web development at his employer, JOOR. He'll go into the context this gained him & some of his personal insights.. including what he brought back to his iOS engineering from the experience.

Isaac Casanova is a Senior Software Engineer at JOOR. He delves into multiple languages & tech stacks on the job, but still loves contributing to the iOS community. When hes not writing code, you can catch him on his skateboard, talking about basketball or about music.

Embracing Reactive Data & View State

James Paolantonio - Senior Engineering Manager @ Betterment

A move toward more "reactive" & declarative code took a big step forward with Apple's announcement of SwiftUI & Combine. Unfortunately, these frameworks will only be available on the newest Apple operating systems. Luckily, there may be ways to begin introducing these patterns today.

In this talk, James will discuss why reactive streams seem to solve the current problems of mobile & the web. James will talk through examples showing why streams are sometimes the most natural solution for solving complex problems. He will also share tips & tricks to enhance productivity, testability, & collaboration.

James Paolantonio is an engineering manager at Betterment, concentrating on mobile. He has been developing in Objective-C & Swift since 2012. Over the past few years, he has lead iOS, Android & backend development teams. James is interested in helping engineering teams move efficiently while experimenting with new patterns & technologies.
